It is with heavy hearts and boundless sadness that the family of Robert Allan “Al” Walker, Ret. Platoon Chief, Red Deer Emergency Services, announce his peaceful passing at the Red Deer Regional
Hospital on Thursday January 14th, 2010, at the age of 68 years with his loving Karen by his side. Al was born and raised in the Barrhead, AB area. He spent his childhood on the family farm; hunting, trapping and farming. At the age of 19 years, Al moved to Red Deer, eventually working as a volunteer firefighter before joining the Red Deer Fire Department on July 1, 1965. He retired as a platoon chief in 1996 to pursue their dream. For 13 years he sailed and travelled the world, enjoying the countries, their people and the sport of spearfishing, reaching the Seychelle Islands in the Indian Ocean before his
sailing journey ended. Al is survived and will be forever remembered by Karen, his loving wife and partner of 34 years, two sons; Cameron (Patti) and granddaughter Anastasia of Spruce Grove, AB, and Scott of Barrhead, AB. His memory will also be cherished by his mother Edna of Barrhead, AB, sister Dorothy (Barry) Martin of Grande Prairie, AB, and his brother Barry (Carolyn) of Rochfort Bridge, AB. Al was predeceased by his brother, Ronald; his father, Alex; his grandson, Perry; and granddaughter, Suzanne.

Al loved the outdoors – give him a chainsaw, some trees (alive or dead) and he was a happy man. Throw in some friends and family and a match for the campfire and he was a really happy man. He’s saved a few from hypothermia with his firelighting skills, that of course being a prerequisite of his real job! Let him out with his rototiller and you had a garden, plant the seeds and he had it weed free. Whether he was camping, skiing, gardening, fishing, or sailing the outdoors was his.
He was a remarkable man, a wonderful husband, son, brother, father, grandfather and uncle. A friend to all, he was loved. He never asked or expected anything in return.
